The great American breakfast:
- Fried chicken;
- Biscuits (mind you these are not the biscuits what we eat with our tea but more like buttermilk scones - tastes divine with melted butter - true home style comfort food);
- Dumplings and
Having lived in Europe for several years I was used to having waffles with whipped cream/ ice-cream /strawberries or a simple dusting of powdered sugar. But in America , waffles are served with fried chicken. The Americans have a unique way of combining sweet with savory. Another example of mixing sweet and savory is serving barbecue / brisket / ribs with sweet corn bread.
During my visit to Ithaca, last month, we decided to go for an all -american breakfast/brunch on a Sunday morning. Decided on a popular restaurant chain called 'Cracker Barrel' for brunch. Every Cracker Barrel chain has an interesting souvenir store attached to their restaurant, selling kitschy-kitchen related and home decorative articles. The decor of the restaurant has an old world charm with a fire place, old photographs, antics and knickknacks, giving it a retro look.
Ordered buttermilk pancakes with homemade white butter and syrup, fried eggs and bacon, smoky sausages, Sunday special fried chicken, a side of mac and cheese and freshly baked buttermilk biscuits with freshly brewed house coffee. That indeed was a scrumptious breakfast !!!!!
The pancakes were superbly done. Soft and melting inside, lacy at the edges. With a dollop of homemade butter and a dredging of accompanying syrup on the pancakes transported me straight to food heaven. The crisp bacon with fried eggs were good, the sausages were smoky and flavorful. The 'mac & cheese was comforting and the biscuits were straight out of the oven.
Overall a wonderful experience! now I know the value of the saying "eat Breakfast like a king ". I am already getting pancake dreams and I am going back for another helping of their buttermilk pancakes really very soon !!!!
